Then, you have no problem with your game, right?

In your case, the related Windows issue is about the missing foreign language pack. You probably need that. It is used to enable foreign typing in addition to that system language itself. I think the game might not detect any kind of foreign symbols if you're not using your specific system language.

If your old WC3: ROC key wasn't used, you can just register it to your Battle.net account and get the latest patch (play on Classic graphics).
I'm not quite sure about your 2nd question. Every versions of WC3 may work on certain mods (custom maps/campaigns).

My ROC key was used back when the game was released. So it's no good anymore? And when it comes to TFT? Is the best option to just go on ebay or wherever and buy a CDROM? I'm guessing it can't be pre-owned?

Unfortunately, getting a legit but original copies of ROC/TFT nowadays is quite hard, except you will definitely want the CD Keys. 3rd party marketplaces like G2A is still a good place.
Of course, purchasing a full game of Reforged on Blizzard as tulee suggested is the best choice. You'll get an up-to-date version of the game, which includes your own ROC key for unlocking the Classic graphics already attached to your Battle.net account. No need to check your game versions for playing certain custom maps or campaigns.

That's such a tangled up, years-old can of worms man. I wouldn't even know where to start... But yeah, for many the issue is broken promises. For many others, broken maps & mods & no longer work with various updates.

Be aware that most people have referred to 1.32+ as the Reforged patches even if Classic.

The Classic and Reforged graphics mode are simply game modes that can be switched inside the settings. "Classic HD" is basically a mix-up between the two that was introduced in 2.0+.

Whichever map/campaign does not properly work on the latest game version, should definitely be played on the recommended version (the one it was made on). Best thing to do to not find out what works and what not is to play them directly on the recommended patches.

tulee actually said that staying on the latest patch (Reforged) is the best way, assuming you have owned the game legally.

But as deepstrasz said, not all campaigns/maps are designed to work on the latest patch because of different reasons, like the map was made with third-party World Editor or used the memory hacks or even the maps have such a random bugs that were unresolved on the latest patch (as he mentioned). That is why HIVE had always added the "Recommended Version" tags on each maps and campaigns.

Sadly, I have no clear idea how to solve this problem.

Getting an older versions of WC3 in a different language (like Russian) is extremely difficult today. Blizzard only provides an official download link for both Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne 1.27. The other patches like 1.28.5 or 1.31 are made with the Battle.net Launcher, and it will install the latest patch of the game that makes it unplayable since it requires logging into the Battle.net.

You might try to use the Google search to find a Russian version of WC3, but as we may know on, those download sites are illegal and HIVE won't probably support any kind of piracy.

You wanted a 1.28.5 version so you can download it from the Eurobattle.net Discord Server or from this thread, but it's in English.

I already tried searching extensively on google and torrent sites, but there are none 1.28.5 RU versions... And I already have my own ROC and TFT keys, so I'm not looking for piracy, just looking for archive with game files for that particular version...

If you're aiming for the later patches, you shouldn't download both ROC and TFT from the "Game Installers" section. Only download the ones from the "Game Files" section. It's already pre-patched to the specific version, so all you have to do is extract the whole content, start the game, and input your CD Key when prompted. Remember to NOT touch anything that's related to Battle.net (like starting the Warcraft III Launcher) if you don't plan to install more buggy Reforged update.

But tulee said that going straight to the Reforged (2.0.1) by purchasing a full game is the best way. Older campaigns and maps can still be playable on the latest patch, provided those campaigns and maps don't have sorts of map protection and memory hacks. Though, I was aware about plethora amount of bugs you encountered with Reforged, and you have already mentioned the fact you can't play Reforged smoothly on your old 2018 laptop.

As I already mentioned above, and the ones by deepstrasz, not all campaigns and maps are intended to work properly on the latest patch due to the known bugs. They should definitely be played on the recommended version (the one it was made on). In addition, maps and campaigns that are using non-official Blizzard World Editor (like JNGP) or some kind of memory hacks (like DOTA) may not work properly on the latest patch, unless you're playing on the safest patch (like 1.26).

Turnro's campaigns, with the exception of Malfurion's Quest (1.31), are still playable on any pre-Reforged versions of WC3, even though this campaign, along with Rowan campaign that you mentioned, have Reforged versions.

LordPerenoldeII also has a remake of Warcraft II storyline (Human and Orc campaigns) using Warcraft III that may work on the pre-Reforged versions of WC3. Unfortunately, the original author said that it only works properly on 1.28.5. I believe if you play on the latest patch, there are a lot of bugs that were unresolved such as the troublesome "Lumber Mill" bug, where the amount of wood doesn't increase.

In short, the best thing to do to not find out what works and what not is to play campaigns and maps directly on the recommended patches.

Hey, thanks, this helps a lot.
So looks like my best bet to run all the campaigns I'm interested in is to just grab 1.28.5 for now. And if theres's some issue I'll move up or down a patch depending on what the creators say.
Thanks for breaking down what patches work for each campaign, I tried to find that info but was having trouble.

Edit: Looks like Rowan the Wise needs a different version of WC III. The WC I remakes work. Edit 2: oh I think I got the Reforged version, I'll get the legacy version

You can also try either 1.29 or 1.30. Those patches had just added the Widescreen and 24 players, while not quite buggy hard than 1.31.
But I'm still aware about those patches since you may encounter numerous bugs that Blizzard only fixed some of those on Reforged.

Sry but how can I start this successfully? The latest version 1.32.10 noHD, noCASC will always start the Blizzard update and try to update the PTR version and not start the game.
Version 1.31.1 starts a black screen and nothing happens.

According to Bogdan, his 1.32.10 game file was intended for World Editor in case you have a corrupted maps. There's really nothing you can do. Battle.net will always auto-update your existing Warcraft 3: Reforged installation to the latest patch, and since his file didn't contain the CASC, the game will remove any modified files and replaced it with the original ones weighing around 30GB.

The black screen issue in 1.31.1 can be solved by changing the in-game language. The game will try to sync your OS language by default, and if it doesn't match, it won't start. You can try playing this game in English.

You could try changing your system language to English, then play the game on English language.
After changing your system language to English, open Regedit, navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment", create two new keys called "Classic Launcher" and "w3". Inside the "w3" sub-folders, make sure that the string called "Locale" is set to "enUS".
Make sure the "Launcher.db" item is "enUS" as well. You can find this file in the game root itself.

Already tried finding a german version of that specific patch online with no luck. Always fun when big companies kill your ways to play.

That was the first one I tried. Changing the registry langue causes no dialoge and cinematics to be instantly skipped, something another user in that thread mentioned (funnily enough for german too) but sadly he never replied again.
I'm currently in the guys discord asking about it but the chances of a fix seem grim. I was wondering if it was even possible because so far I havent seen anyone with a working german version of 1.28 - 1.32 here.
I will ask the user if he fixed it, dont want to derail the thread here too much.

Unfortunately, changing the in-game language on pre-Reforged versions (1.28-1.31) seems to be a difficult task for every users who wanted to stay on pre-Reforged.

There's also an alternate trick on getting any pre-Reforged versions of Warcraft III with your preferred language by using BlizzGet, but now that this tool only downloads the latest patch of the game (2.0.1).

If you were looking for online play on pre-Reforged with official Battle.net server, then absolutely no.
For online play on pre-Reforged, you have to search for any third-party servers like Eurobattle.net.
You can also play this game online with friends through LAN, but it will probably require a third-party method like Radmin.

I'm not doing any savescumming. I don't get trees in the campaigns or custom games. I tried playing Founding of Durotar, and the questgivers are invisible.
