I have not, but I know all about the whole "Tonight we dine in hell!" and "This is Sparta!" thing going around, and frankly, it's stupid. And I've heard alot about it from my friend because he's a raving lunatic about.

Just from that clip alone I could tell the movie was easily WAAAAAAY overrated.

The thing that probably got everyone so hyped up about that part was the fact that it was random violence and slo-mo, doesn't work on me.

And I've heard that the concept is 300 spartans vs. 1 MILLION soldiers, which is downright ridiculous and only leads to 13 year olds inflating their ego by going "LOL!!! I COULD DO THAT ON MY OWN!!!! LOL!!" Leading to a bunch of horrid fanfictions where they insert themselves as the "mysterious and legendary... 301st spartan!!" Who has returned when they disappeared/thought dead/avenging family who supposedly died/etc. Where they are supposedly BETTER than the 300 combined, and single-handedly save Sparta from the the Persians.

Some of the characters were just to appease the raging fanboys who think they're evil and that gory violence is the best thing since sliced bread (hence the guy with two blades for ARMS!!??)

This shows the deterioration of our standards on movies, showing that apparently, mindless violence grouped with visual effects is the only thing people want, rather than developing the characters.

And I only pray it doesn't get so far as the Chuck Norris facts (They need to die already ok? So Chuck Norris kicked someone, big freakin' whoop.)

Now you might try and throw Peter Jackson's adaptation of Lord of the Rings at me, well I'm perfectly prepared.

Peter Jackson BUTCHERED Tolkien's work. He ruined the story line quite a bit

-The duel between Gandalf and Saruman in the Fellowship? Never Happened.
-Aragorn receiving Anduril in Rohan? In the book he receives Anduril is Rivindell right before they set off on their quest.
-Saruman's death? He actually dies in the shire, with Wormtounge killing him, who is then killed by hobbits archers.
-Elves arriving at Helm's Deep? Never happened.

Now I could go on and on but I think you get my point.

Well, that was a long-winded rant.

the ledgend of the 300 spartans fighting 10,00 persians is a real ledgend. but it is a ledgend like the minatoar or jason and the arganoughts or troy, i dont think your suppost to dismantle it and analyse it, its just supposed to be fun to watch. anyways 300 was based on a novel that was based on the ledgend so its obviously gunna be different and seeing as the novel was written by the same guy who wrote the sin city novels it was always going to be exagerated. i really like 300 anyways.

i have also read the LOTR books and i liked em, i liked the film too. i know alot of stuff is different but i think its still a good adaption. i know peter jackson justifies alot of the changes in the dvd commentaries and most of it was because the costs would be too high to include that scene, so they would make up for it with another scene or because they wouldnt want to include something quite long and significant into an already long film, so they "pay tribute" to it by having a scene which is different to the book but is still vaguelly related, just so the thing is mentioned.

and also i love fight scenes, i personally think you cant beat a good, well directed fight scene.

I loved the movie... It was brilliant, but i cant watch it again its too boreing >.<

@ Last - i got up to the 300 spartans vs 1 million persians bit and stopped reading, you clearly havnt got you facts right! It was more than 1 million (and a bit more than 300) and the whole movie was based on a true story!
Sure the story is almost completely inaccurate as far as the monsters in the persian army and the location ( i think ) go but 300 spartans did give a massive persian army a good ass kickn at some point in history!

It's not about historical accuracy.

It's about stylised action and one-liners. I really can't see what's so wrong with that, to be honest. It might not be your thing, Last Istari, but that's no reason to be so bitter about it.

If you can show me how shooting the messanger while yelling "This is Sparta!" is awesome beyond all belief and reason, I'll change my opinion about 300 and say it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Don't get me wrong, Jackson did an excellent job with the battles themselves, but I really don't like with what he did in quite a few places and a few things... like Legolas.

Jackson took Legolas, turned him from an elf to a "uberwtfpwnt" Elf that can apparently; Jump on a troll's back and shoot it in the head with 3 arrows, surf down a staircase and fling a shield right into an uruk's neck, climb up a mumakil's leg, cut the rope holding the men of the south on it's back, kill all the enemies that were trying to kill him, and bring down a mumakil then slide down it's trunk and come out unscathed. All within a minute.

I'm not asking you to think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, I'm asking you not to be so bitter that everyone else likes it and you don't. Geez.

The reason I'm so bitter is because everywhere I freakin' go whereever 300 is hinted at, the whole discussion turns into nothing but everyone saying "Tonight we dine in hell!" and "This is Sparta!"

It's an internet phenomenon that should have never existed.

yeh actually all that stuff pissed me off too, i dont like legolas or what hes does. ur not good ur just a show off, gandalf could do that but hes doesnt need to impress us with flash moves. i think the reason jackson did that was to appeal to the "12 year old skater kid/middle aged women" social groups...like seriously i think he even say that in his commentry.

i also like the bit in 300 where they all shout out "aaahoo, aaahoo" or "haauu, haaauu!" u know, the bit where they all but their spear in the air and shout, its after a speech or something.

Id like to point out a few things. One, is for GST_Nemesis: The movie 300 actually was not based off a myth. That battle really did happen, 300 Spartans did fight and die at the battle of thermopylae. If you listen to the end of the movie, one of the characters mentions Plataea (the battle that marked a turning point in the greco-persian war)
Also, I'd like to point out to The Last Istari that the movie deserves all the awards and huplah its gotten. The movie really was awesomely portrayed and I would appreciate it if you didnt criticize something you havn't experienced first hand. The movie is very well done, the props are authentic and its a breakthrough in movies not because of the slow-mo effects but because the entire movie was shot in one room that was somewhere around the size of a football stadium. All the backgrounds, the floors, the city is all computerized. It really is amazing.
Finally, for any other 300 haters out there, Id like to say that if you have something wrong with a movie that depicts people dying for freedom, then there is something terribly wrong with you. Now I dont hold anything against you for not liking a movie you havnt seen, but please see it if you're going to criticize it.
As for butchering the LOTR series, its hollywood. Hollywood always butchers movies, they are like the press - its never a good enough story.

I really don't see what the problem with it is.

This is the internet.

Phenomena inhabit it.

The end.

Time for you to take a chill pill, sir. :)

I win for having a stupider quote.

Anyways, the movie 300 was based off of a real battle (like Herio-san said) that really happened. I forget the exact details, but it was fought to stall the Persians so that the Athenians could get their large army/fleet/whatever into position to deal a crushing defeat to the Persians.

It worked because it took place in that narrow little mountain pass, not to mention the Spartans were totally hardcore, taking their sons from their families and raising them to be warriors from age 7 (4?). Also, they raised their daughters to be great athletes anyways, so Sparta was basically a city-state of super models that could beat your ass.

The Persians merely had regular soldiers (as opposed to badass Spartans with phalanx shields), and would have totally lost if a Spartan traitor hadn't shown the Persians an alternate way through the mountain pass to break the Spartan phalanx from behind.

Sorry, couldn't resist, and yes, I know I'm being a hypocrite for taking a shot at another internet gig and not yelling at it.

the ledgend of the 300 spartans fighting 10,00 persians is a real ledgend.

sorry for my awful spelling of legend there but what i mean was it is a real event that has been passed on as a story though the ages, because i was told that the modern story is not exactly as the actually battle happened, but its near enough right. i havent actually researched into it, but alot of the old legends are not 100% accurate, so i just assumed this was the same.

The whole "dieing for freedom" thing was what pissed me off about it. Thats merely putting modern ideals into the movie. I knew it wasnt supposed to be historically accurate but I thought they should have at least got the general spartan thinking down. The whole freedom part is all fine and dandy and so is the part where he kills the wolf. But I find it ironic that one of the main themes was freedom because spartans had slaves. And then having him kill a wolf as a right of passage instead of killing the slaves (which is what they did). All in all I like the movie though. It exceeded my expectations actually. I went in thinking it would be crap. But it was still pretty cool. But I still think they should have gotten some of the more key elements of just how the spartans line of thinking was.

Im dont wanna insult any1 but how is tht so great? He kicks a guy in the hole wow. Welcome to my everyday life.
I'm not sure you're aware of this, but that was a clip of an entire movie.

My persian friend keeps saying he hates the movie, even though he doesn't know anything about the movie beyond its name and the fact that Persians are the enemy. I personally think the movie was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Perhaps it's not as deep as Gone With the Wind or something like that, but it was a great movie.

Are you calling me a communist?

Nah, just defending my side of the argument my dear friend . I dont think any less of you if you don't like a certain movie and I hope you don't think less of me for appreciating certain aspects of it.

Also, its not really "everyones freedom" that the spartans were fighting for (just wanted to clear this up) it was "their freedom" lol. It was a pretty good movie still. I would recommend seeing it if you havn't.

Well I dont doubt they wanted to remain free and independant. I just thought freedom was out of place in the movie. Sure they didnt want to be ruled over by the persians. But the spartans more wanted to show off I think. Their entire culture revolved around military perfection (which is a theme in the movie) and getting to go up against the best army in the world (which was the persians at the time) would have been the ultimate testing ground. Glory for themselves, their family, and their spartan heritage was the main reason they went I think. Also in the movie they had the oracle or at least the messed up leppor (spelling?) guys say that the spartans were to not go to war. In the history books the oracle says that for ultimate victory over the persians a spartan king must die. Which, although is merely speculation amoungst historians, is the reason why Leonidis decided to stay. Religious belief that he would have to die for persian defeat.

I say I think alot because well... I am hardly a historian. Just remember stuff from history class and the various documentaries floating about. So some of that may be wrong. But I think I got most of it about right.

Oh and my favorite part of the movie was at the end when he throws the spear and scrapes Xerxes face. It is one thing to kill a man and another to take away a "gods" immortality. Or at least thats how I interpretted that part.

remember this was not based on the story of real Battle of Thermopylae, its based on a graphic novel, written by the same guy who writes sin city, which is based on the real battle. so its an adaptation of an adaptation. i personally am glad they kept at least some of it true, remember the films called "300" with the tag line "Prepare for glory!" not "The Real Battle of Thermopylae" with the tagline "a historycal documentary of real events". it was always going to be nuts and focused on action not story, but i think the story they kept in is good story and the film has been directed and produced very well.

WTF does Communism have ANYTHING to do with this conversation? Communists are far above you thanks. THEY want a utopian society. You want internet phenomina to go away. Big difference= methinks.

dude....some people like action scenes. some people like 300 and lethal weapon and all the james bond films. some people like to see a man(s) struggle against the odds (and possibly an evil corporation) to succeed. and if you dont like big, pointless and high budget explosions with kung-fu fighting, mad car chases and shout-outs with bazookas then maybe there is something wrong with you :p :p :p

Recently I have watched many movies with:
-depressive endings
-no conclusion (if not small) because most of the time there wasn't anything to conclude
-cruel violence (torture, disgusting and painful deaths...)
-small or not that great action scenes
-lots of really thought out stories with loads of subtleties

So for me, watching 300 is a break from that universe, which is frankly getting way too common and depressive. Instead I get to watch a movie with:
-Tiny plot (less thinking, thats good. :p)
-conclusions
-Awesome action scenes with cool slow-mo footage and exagerations
-Mindless violence (in the sense of "I cut you, now you dead, me go cut next soldier)

It was fun to relax from all those other movies which don't get the right combination of action and twisting "smart" plots and see a movie where the only thing I see is awesome battle scenes and the like.

So far I've only seen one movie with a perfect combination of action and scenario/story/plot, and that is V for Vendetta, which remains my favorite movie of all time.

No one needs your negative manner of speaking. If there was a misunderstanding, you don't go after someone for it

Anyhow, I watched the film fully aware that most things were probably exaggerated, but it was still the best action movie I've ever seen.

It isnt that it was exaggerated. Thats what made the film cool. I just think if you are going to make a movie or comic or whatever; that you should at least get the big picture sort of things. Key events. The rest is pretty much fair game.

The last istari, please do not become unreasonable. I would really hate for you to get into any sort of trouble over an inadvertant and playful joust to support a position in an arguement. There is no need to start getting angry and flaming (especially against a mod). Surely what was said could be considered unkind, however communism is people striving for a society that cannot co-exist with human nature. Therefore by comparing you to a communist, it could be inferred that you are someone who strives for a setfourth goal for the good of humanity that is only unachievable because of human flaw. Thats not so bad is it? (Not that Im a communist, just trying to lower the tension in this thread)
Also, Gst_Nemesis, you spelt intelligence wrong roflcopter . Oh, and yes. I did see the irony in that statement haha.

V for Vendetta was epic. I only saw part of it, and it totally made my month.

='( so does that mean if something that got as much attention as 300 wasn't as good, what I wonder are the chances of another gem like V ever happening again?

How dare you people have a flame war without me? You could find a fair amount of good ones with me in them if you know what to search for. Realistically, it's a MOVIE. The first problem was the comment about not appreciating dying for freedom being worded so viciously, the second problem is the involvement of the word "communist". Then this mess happened:
  • Communists are far above you thanks
  • I guess I should've worded it more simply so it wouldn't go way over your tiny pea-brained mind.
  • So he deserved the insult and whatever hell comes to that asshole.
  • Exactly! I agree with you 100% +rep! (in response to this: no wait you are right, insulting people solves everything without the use of inteligence.)
  • Brad, how much did it take for you to bribe Ralle into making you a mod? (recent addition)
With the possible exception of the first one, all of them appear to me to be serious. If you're going to have a flame war at all, at least make it about something more relevant than a movie.
