Time has proven that you can't stop all the inflow of spam, I'd probably ignore the most of it now. Then again, there were times in which we could not select how much reputation we wanted to dish out: it was a choice of either positive or negative.

Yes. Otherwise, after one person helps someone else, earns rep, and one day the other person becomes angry and takes away rep that the person didn't deserve to lose, just isn't good.
