What's up with "aggressive" and lying players on Warcraft 3 custom games?

I recently started playing some WC3 custom games and people will randomly join and make wild accusations like:

  • The map you're playing has a cheat pack in it! Then print out some JASS code that shows one of the player's username in it to activate the cheatpack. Anyone can just copy + paste this stuff to make accusations
  • I've been accused of "multiboxing"?

I only own a single WC3 account and I've never had my name in a cheatpack.

Have people gone crazy? Or is there some truth to what people are saying? Like is there a scanner that automatically tells you if a map is "hacked"?

Maybe what you are seeing are bots sent by Riot and Valve to make people hate Reforged and go play Dota 2 and League of Legends. They wouldn't want you to realize that custom games on this game are comparable to that game, but without the paid things. Their financial livelihood and existence depends upon people believing that this game is unplayable, and that it is reasonable to play in a non-customizable dead-end technology -- so that people somehow believe it is reasonable to pay money for changing character model. Even though we can change character model by editing Art - Model File in the drop down menu.

There are entire offices, and rooms full of people, who believe it is their job to profit off of their fellow human being in this way.

interesting angle. I actually really like the dota monetization model. It was a breath of fresh air when coming over from hearthstone, where you have to pay hundreds of dollars a year just to be able to play the game normally (I was a f2p player who tried making decks out of table scraps). In dota you have the full game, with all it's functionality for free. you even get free cosmetics from drops and from events multiple times a year. and this isn't a low maintenance game either, it's constantly developing and freshening up with balance patches that majorly change the game and big QOL changes. even the events are usually 70% free.

Obviously it needs to make a profit somehow in order to have people keep working on it. I think optional cosmetics are by far the least obnoxious way to do this. I get that as a modder it looks very silly to have to pay to use a different model file for the same thing, but the same logic goes for a lot of things. that's just how supply and demand works. How would you suggest to make a game long term profitable (again, for a game that is constantly getting major updates) in a better way?

P.S. I am definitely not one of those Valve bots you were talking about earlier, no siree not me.

Warcraft 3 maps exist but are not profitable. The dota map existed but wasn't profitable. Why does it need to be "profitable" if it could instead just be a bunch of guys having fun?

it doesn't need to be, but I don't think being that way is a bad thing. I don't think most of the games I have enjoyed many hours of would exist if the video game industry didn't exist and it was all free hobbyist stuff. This whole website and community are based on a triple A game created by consumerism.

isn't it great that a guy like icefrog who started off as a part of the wc3 modder community, has now gained so much traction that he gets to work on his passion project as his full time job? I just don't see how that is a negative.

There could be a smaller version of that within the WC3 community, but the motioning away from that is kind of top-to-bottom. The shitty new EULA we got with Reforged has monetization against its terms. It's strange when some of the same members of the community that talk about how great some of the WC3 mods are will, in the same breath, say that any of the modders wanting to monetize their project should go elsewhere. It's no wonder game devs think of even roblox as a better platform to work on.

I went and read my paper handbook from 2002 and it was similarly dumb. When it talked about moral rights, there is a case to be made that maybe it was only referring to the ingame characters and not the custom games, but it was clear about the idea that Blizzard has the right to force anyone to delete all their Warcraft 3 maps off their computer. So they could certainly blackmail you to do whatever they want if you're a serious Wc3 modder.

I mean, I've paid out thousands of dollars to friends to support/motivate their wc3 projects, but it's still a stupid idea. Their career would be better if they went and did some other more sustainable thing. Isn't that true of everyone? Why should anyone be doing wc3 modding for the money? If you know money, you know that anybody who is doing wc3 for money is doing money wrong. There are more profitable ways of getting more money in a shorter span of time.

But I don't think that means Warcraft 3 modding should cease to exist. But why is it wrong for me to make a ton of money doing something other than wc3, and then I can make any amount of Warcraft 3 mods based on what I want to make, rather than what the money would guide me to make?

It's no wonder game devs think of even roblox as a better platform to work on.
I haven't really played roblox, so I'm not really sure I have empathy for someone who would want to use it. That is my ignorance, not necessarily a reason not to use it. But are those people game devs, or just opportunists and profiteers who want to profit off of children?
