Neutral Heroes not appearing in WE

I've been skulking around the HIVE for a few days, and the resources here have helped me greatly. Unfortunately, I've come upon something that I've yet to see addressed so I had to ask it myself.

I wanted to play around with the neutral heroes added in patches (Tinkerer, Alchemist, Firelord) and they won't show up in the World Editor. I play the maps with taverns in-game and there they are, but I open (seemingly) those same maps in the WE and they aren't there. I even use the Test Map command and the tavern in the test map has three less heroes than the one in the actual game.

I assume since those heroes in question should be stock assets like the other five neutral heroes, they should appear in any map I load regardless. They do not appear in any.

Seemingly this is a problem with my WE; but I can't say for certain. I'm stumped, honestly.

Here's a copy of a map that exhibits the behavior. I open the map in WE and there's five neutral heroes, I play the map in-game and there's eight.

The game is 1.28 and the WE is version 6031.

The maps I'm referring to were made by Blizzard; they're the default ones that come with TFT. I didn't modify them in any way.

This happens because patches have added heroes that didn't exist in the retail game. Melee maps don't actually use the data you see in the object editor (since those don't IMPORT any object data if you want them to remain MELEE), they use SLKs that refer to the latest patch, instead.

Interesting. Would that explain the heroes in question not appearing in any map then, even a completely new one?

Yes, any map that doesn't import object data has this problem. Melee maps are just a typical example of such maps.

I was not aware of that! Does it stand to reason that in order to play around with those heroes, I would have to manually import the data for them to a map? If so, where would I import the data from? I would assume it's in the main folder somewhere since it's data introduced by the patches, but if there's an easier location to fetch it from knowing that could save me time and effort digging for it.

As far as I know, yes.

It's in Map Options -> Game Data Set

This seems like a probable solution that I'm looking for. I go under Scenario -> Map Options and there's no Game Data Set field. There's fields for Terrain Fog and Water Tinting Color among other things, but nothing close to that option.

There is something called External Custom Data Source in the Map Properties tab, but I suspect that's not what you mean.

I genuinely don't have that option. I looked on both a new map and the Blizzard map and there's nothing there either way.

Perhaps my toolset is an outdated version?

Certainly.

There are two in my Warcraft 3 folder, but they both perform identically. Due to the file size difference, I assume one is a shortcut to the other that Blizzard made. For what reason, I couldn't tell you.

I hope so, I have the game disks and CD-Keys in front of me. Jewel cases, instruction books... I think I might have the original boxes in the attic somewhere.

If I use Warcraft III Launcher.exe to start the game, it says it's 1.28. (This is what I normally use) If I use Frozen Throne.exe or Warcraft III.exe it says the game at version 1.07. As far as I know, the launcher was created when Blizzard patched my game when I connected to Battle.net. (I did this purely to patch my game and not to actually use Battle.net)

I suppose I could uninstall and give it another go around, but this would be the third time in a few days where the same thing has happened. I even tried to manually patch the two 1.07 executables but the patches struck an error, which I guessed at the time was brought about because it already thought the game was 1.28.

Hmm... I recommend completely uninstall it, even the registry data. Backup maps and campaigns folder before doing it though.

EDIT :
And of course, install it again.

Okay. Did all that, including using Ccleaner to clean out the registry (which there were quite a few remnants of, wow Blizzard), and reinstalled. After testing, we seem to be back on square one, as everything is the same as before.

Don't install it from CDs, install it from the downloader. CD installation has been bugging since 1.24+ as far as I know.

That might just be it, I've been using the CDs. Is the downloader on Blizzard's site?

log on to battle net, go to your classic games, and you'll find the downloader for warcraft III and after that is installed everything should work fine

Ah, creating an account with Blizzard just to play a decade old title. Well, it could be worse.

Thanks you two. I imagine this will solve my problem. Rep for the both of you.

EDIT: Problem solved! A little miffed that I had to actually make a Blizzard account, download the Blizzard app, put my CD keys into my account management, gift WC3 and TFT to myself, and then download a second .exe that finally installed the game to a file path that I'd rather not have installed it to without it giving me a choice.

But that's not you guy's fault. You guys are alright in my book.
